How We Grade Cards

At  Phantom Labs, every card is evaluated with a blend of expert craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology. Each submission is inspected in-house by our trained grading specialists using high-resolution microscopes to assess surface quality, corner sharpness, edge integrity, and centering accuracy.

We grade on four specific factors: Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface. Each factor receives a grade between 1-10. We take the lowest of the four grades and that is the final grade of the card. For instance a card graded Centering: 8 , Corners: 10, Edges: 10 , Surface: 10 , will receive a final grade of 8.

Surface

The front and back should be free of scratches, stains or print defects; any surface damage lowers the grade

Corners

Corners must be sharp with no creases or bends

Edges

The edges should be crisp without fraying, chipping or dents

Centering

We measure the card’s borders to assess how evenly the image is centered. Cards with uneven borders can lose points.

To ensure consistency, our grading system follows a 10point scale similar to leading grading companies:

To eliminate human bias, we also employ AI-assisted proportion analysis, ensuring each grade reflects true precision and consistency. From vintage collectibles to modern releases, every card is handled with extreme care, securely encapsulated, and verified for authenticity—so you can trust that every Phantom-graded card meets the highest professional standards in the industry.
*Grades can include qualifiers for special situations—miscut cards, severe off centering, alterations or counterfeits will be labeled accordingly and may not be encapsulated. Cards deemed counterfeit or altered are returned without a numerical grade
